August 31, 2005

31. August 2005 -- Mittwoch

Problems: various footprints issues about email, smtp from off campus and hung imap sessions.

sec.pl: test the SingleWithSuppress to make sure what I did to fix the problem on ferret yesterday will actually work (carcajou is my test platform). No, it doesn't work. Found a way that does and installed it on Ferret.

Tru: replaced battery in A1000... ooooh sealed Lead/Acid batteries! Yippee!

August 30, 2005

30. August 2005 -- Dienstag

LDAP/Accounts: Created an account for the "Student Employee" that has been showing up since Saturday -- still can't find the Student record to pair this person with, but their employment starts on Thursday, so time to give up and create an account. Hopefully, enough info will match when the Banner record gets entered that we won't create a duplicate account.

August 29, 2005

29. August 2005 -- Montag

FootPrints: new cit login html file put in place.

LDAP: generate report of problems for registrar.

TRU: A1000 has dead battery... reported to SUN for service.

Calendar: another db_VISTA error (#6 this time) that needs the server shutdown and unidbfix -f -level full run... 8pm to 11pm

August 27, 2005

27. August 2005 -- Samstag

CALENDAR: Report db_VISTA ERROR 6 to Oracle (TAR 4657085.992) and delete a duplicate account for Account Services (how do people get a duplicate account added into Calendar in the first place???)

LDAP: two "student employee" as primary affiliation errors... and one duplication that I happened to catch caused by another "student employee" error that I had handled by creating the account earlier in the week. I was able to find and merge the information for one of the two people today. I did not create an entry for the second person, rather deleted their information from the copy of the feed that the next update run will compare against -- so they'll appear to be new again. Perhaps, Banner will have fed their information in at that time. Since they aren't being hired until 9/1, I don't see a day or two delay as a big deal -- HR may disagree, but then perhaps they should take the time to get real information to feed to LDAP instead of giving 0's and 9's as important numbers (like UVM Barcode, Birthday, SSN, and Banner PIDM)

August 26, 2005

26. August 2005 -- Freitag

LDAP: discussion about interns and auth feeds.

Owl: filesystem full led to forced reboot.

SAN: talk about and cable up zoosan5.

WEBCT:Review quotes & make demands

August 25, 2005

25. August 2005 -- Donnerstag

LDAP - Five (5) entry creations failed in the nightly update because there wasn't enough information in the HRS feed about these student employee's to identify the student record to update. I was able to find four of them and created a new entry for the fifth. Hopefully, there is just a problem that will get resolved a little later on and the fifth will start feeding from SIS -- rather than having just created the kind of future merging of two records that is such a pain.

August 24, 2005

24. August 2005 -- Mittwoch

Accounts: update adduser to prevent account names of less than three and more than eight characters.

WebCT: planning for 6.0 hardware requirements

August 23, 2005

23. August 2005 -- Dienstag

LDAP: adapt code to decision made at yesterday's meeting about Temporary Employee being a secondary affiliation.

Project Catalog: sit in on Directory meeting.

General: Several hall discussions concerning webmail and zoosan3.

August 22, 2005

22. August 2005 -- Montag

WebCT: data moved to IBM storage array ... we managed to get off the dotHill before it went completely belly up! Reports from WebCT admin is this new array seems faster... hmmm, ;-)

dotHill: discussions about how to deal with the latest failures from yesterday afternoon and this morning.

LDAP: meeting to discuss Temporary Employees... decision is that "Temporary" is a secondary affiliation -- other UVM affiliations (student, retiree..) are to be the primary.

August 19, 2005

19. August 2005 -- Freitag

LDAP: AD feed didn't work out so good... drat it! Try again..

ds4800: solaris with new RDAC works better! Get sec.pl working so fibre errors will be reported on.

18. August 2005 -- Donnerstag

LDAP: New feed into AD to allow support people to be able to determine where deleted groups were granted permissions.

ds4800: solaris testing.... oops... downlevel version of RDAC, no good!

August 17, 2005

17. August 2005 -- Mittwoch

LDAP: two errors: AD feed changed a filename yesterday and had to be fixed this morning. Student Employee type error out of HR -- had to find correct entry and append HR data to it.

Calendar: fix a problem where the LDAP entry for a calendar user had disappeared. Recreated the LDAP entry with the appropriate objectclass and the single attribute to tie it to the correct node:id pair in the calendar DS... all better!

Legal issues.... gather evidence.

August 16, 2005

16. August 2005 -- Dienstag

LDAP: modify nightly update process to expire groupOfNames based entries for 45 days instead of purging them when all members are removed -- this is a prelude to changing the feed into AD to allow group migration.

August 15, 2005

15. August 2005 -- Montag

General: Update web links for email forwarding and vacation notifications on account page.

August 13, 2005

13. August 2005 -- Samstag

LDAP: RFC2307 rollout.

August 12, 2005

12. August 2005 -- Freitag

LDAP: reload rfc2307 directory on test server (update errors last night that were fixed in the data on the production server earlier).

ERP: quick scan of the "final" configs.

August 10, 2005

10. August 2005 -- Mittwoch

LDAP:

  • Provide current list of duplications back to CatCard folks.
  • Manual combination of two entries into one as evidence of the duplication finally surfaced.
  • Update ldap BB check to work with new RFC2307 dn's
  • Hmm... perhaps the Active Directory feed code should actually work after the RFC2307 conversion this weekend...

General: Saturn needed a swift kick in the pants!

August 9, 2005

9. August 2005 -- Dienstag

LDAP/ERP: Convert catldap to the RFC2307 version that will roll into production on Saturday. Found a few slapd.*conf file changes that will need to happen on the live servers too -- testing is so sweet!

LDAP/RFC2307:

  1. found and fixed a cgi script on cgi.uvm.edu that would have broken after the change on Saturday.
  2. Scripts that need to be replaced on trout and moose are in place with a .rfc2307 final extension for quick and easy swapping.
  3. /etc/ldap.conf changes prepared on penguins and placed as /etc/ldap.conf.rfc2307 for quick cexec replacement.
  4. scripts that need replacing on wolverine are in ~/rfc2307/bin for quick and easy replacment.
  5. tested live update of penguin cluster... works! YAY!

LDAP/maintenance: New info in feed from Banner starting tomorrow. Updated translation table to give status N students a status name of "Non-Degree". Should be about 150 new entries tomorrow morning.

ERP: quick once over on the quotes back from the hardware vendors.

August 8, 2005

8. August 2005 -- Montag

LDAP: Reminder announcement of rfc2307 conversion on 13. August with link to rfc2307.html for people to follow my progress.

Storage: See email that production data was moved onto the array over the weekend for all of m/g and k/a users (Ugh). See email this morning that there are hardware issues (a failed cache backup battery) in the brand spankin new array head. Even IBM equipment has quality issues (Argh!). See that email was sent this morning to the seller (Central Timezone) about how to proceed with getting an IBM service call initiated (can we do it directly, or does the seller still need to do it still -- ie, is it properly listed in the IBM maintenance databases yet).

LDAP: New Retiree's list from HR installed. List generation Perl code updated to deal with the " *" stuff (so people's names do not have trailing spaces in them).

ERP: working with Don on the PeopleSoft<->LDAP/SSL interface. IT WORKS!!!!

LDAP: work on script changes required for RFC2307 conversion (wolverine, trout, moose)

August 5, 2005

5. August 2005 -- Freitag

LDAP: carcajou not working this morning... seems I shutdown the server yesterday and forgot it... loaded fresh copy of the database from wolverine and all is good again.

ERP: attempting to determine which SSL cipher the PeopleSoft code is trying to use. Not having a lot of luck.

LDAP: rebuild mink at RHEL3 -- need to test RHEL3 openldap RPM's before they get put on penguinx and wolverine next weekend. Hmmm, had to delete the mink registration with RHN and recreate it -- was not able to downgrade the registration from RHEL4 to RHEL3.

August 4, 2005

4. August 2005 -- Donnerstag

LDAP: more work on RFC2307 conversion plan and preparations

Scripts: copy needed files from Warthog over to parrot -- now need to work them over so they work on parrot...

ERP: LDAP support work. LDAP Browser (Softerra) is your friend on Windows.

August 3, 2005

3. August 2005 -- Mittwoch

Calendar: attach the cws.log and maillog files as requested to TAR 4560587.992 after the CWS debugging was turned on last night. The cws.log file clearly shows that sendmail is being called with no recipients specified. The question that remains being how did this thing get queued to begin with -- but that's something Oracle will need to figure out.

LDAP: A bunch of people popped up with multiple barcodes assigned (one for their real SSN and one for their Banner ID) last night. I don't understand what is going on here. Talking with MJM yesterday, it may be related to a difference of opinion about when a temporary employee who is also a student is really an employee or a student. Meeting scheduled for August 22.

Scripts: generate list of files that need to move from warthog to parrot in preparation for scripts.uvm.edu moving. Ah, stupid me... I don't have to process all the access_log lines, only the ones that have a 2xx code! Doh, instead of 4000+ files to examine, there's only 121! This is now doable...

Oracle: configure samba to start when system is booted for MJG.

RFC2307: Lay out conversion plan timeline... announce to team for feedback.

August 2, 2005

2. August 2005 -- Dienstag

LDAP: three new duplications from CatCard. Two of them are understandable, the third is troubling and seems to indicate that we have a disagreement about whether a temporary employee who is also a student should be primarily a student or an employee. Need to iron that one out.

ERP: Review design document.

ERP: SSL with LDAP more trickery...

NIM: more meeting...

Calendar: Apply CWS parameter mods to unison.ini (at 10PM) for TAR to gather debugging info about why sendmail is being called without any recipients for mail messages. Had to reboot the system because the web application server didn't restart properly.

August 1, 2005

1. August 2005 -- Montag

ERP: Create UVM CA Certificate installation mechanism (http://cgi.uvm.edu/cgi-bin/fcs/inst_cacert.pl)

ERP: examine traces to see how the SSL is failing.

General: NIM all day meeting....
